Blue horizontal branch stars in metal - rich globular clusters . II . 47 Tuc and NGC 362

چکیده
Atmospheric parameters (Teff , log g), and radial velocities are derived for twelve candidate blue horizontal branch (HB) stars in the globular clusters 47 Tuc and NGC 362, which so far have been known to contain primarily red HB stars. The spectroscopic targets were selected from the catalog of hot stars detected in these clusters at 1600 Å using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT). Spectroscopic analyses of these stars reveal, however, that one of the four HB candidates targets in 47 Tuc, and five out of the eight targets in NGC 362 are probably background stars belonging to the Small Magellanic Cloud. With the exception of the photometric binary MJ38529 in 47 Tuc, the parameters of those stars that are probable members of 47 Tuc and NGC 362 agree well with canonical HB evolution. The three hot stars in 47 Tuc all have 10,000 K < Teff< 15,000 K and include one photometric binary, which suggests that they might have a different physical origin than the dominant red HB population. The somewhat cooler blue HB stars in NGC 362 show more continuity with the dominant red HB population and might simply arise from red giants with unusually high mass loss.

We report the first results of an ongoing spectroscopic survey of blue horizontal branch stars in the metal-rich ([Fe/H] ≃ −0.5) globular clusters NGC 6388 and NGC 6441. Based on data obtained with the ESO– New Technology Telescope (NTT), we provide gravities and temperatures for four stars in NGC 6388 and three stars in NGC 6441. These results are marginally inconsistent with the predictions o...
متن کاملThe Second-Parameter Effect in Metal-Rich Globular Clusters
Recent Hubble Space Telescope observations have found that the horizontal branches (HB’s) in the metal-rich globular clusters NGC 6388 and NGC 6441 slope upward with decreasing B−V . Such a slope is not predicted by canonical HB models and cannot be produced by either a greater cluster age or enhanced mass loss along the red-giant branch (RGB). The peculiar HB morphology in these clusters may p...

We present time-series V I photometry of the metal-rich globular cluster NGC 6316. Our color-magnitude diagrams show a predominantly red-clump horizontal branch morphology with no evidence of the blue extensions seen in NGC 6388 and NGC 6441. Our data are in good agreement with published estimates of the reddening and metallicity provided the cluster has an absolute distance modulus of 15.50 ma...

We study the dense core of the globular cluster Messier 13 (NGC 6205) using pre-refurbishment Planetary Camera-I images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. Short exposures (60 s) through the F555W and F785LP filters (similar to Johnson V and I, respectively) have been used to obtain V and I photometry of 2877 stars brighter than V ∼ 20 in a 1.25 arcmin region of the cluster including its ...
